The Winegrowers

Hervé Souhaut

It was in 1993 that Hervé Souhaut and his wife Béatrice, heiress to a few vineyards in the Ardèche region, within the Saint-Joseph appellation, created the Romaneaux-Destezet estate. The acquisition of plots – often old, even very old vines, such as the plot on the Sainte-Épine hillside in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols – and new plantings expanded the vineyard, which now covers 7 hectares, supplemented by the purchase of grapes. Driven by strong convictions about viticulture that respects nature, the estate has evolved towards more demanding practices, leading to natural winemaking, without chemicals or oenological additives, following the example of Marcel Lapierre (Morgon) or, locally, Dard and Ribo. The reds, made from Syrah or Gamay ( La Souteronne ), and the whites, made from Viognier and/or Roussanne, offer some of the most authentic expressions of the granitic terroir of the Northern Rhône.
